English as a Second Language (ESL) Academic Program


Luzerne County Community College English as a Second Language (ESL) intensive credit program is designed to help you learn the necessary English language skills to enroll in college-level courses. The goal of this comprehensive program is to help you achieve the level of language proficiency required to succeed in college and beyond. Classes are offered day and night at multiple campus locations, customized to your individual level. Financial Aid is available for those who qualify.

The Curriculum

Students enrolled in the program take two semesters of ESL courses that include reading, writing, speaking and listening. A third semester includes college-level courses required for your major.

First Semester
  • ESL 018 Fundamentals of Grammar (6 credits)
  • ESL 019 Reading and Vocabulary (3 credits)
  • ESL 020 Communication Skills (3 credits)
Second Semester
  • ESL 028 Fundamentals of Writing (6 credits)
  • ESL 029 Reading and Vocabulary II (3 credits)
  • ESL 030 Advanced Communication Skills (3 credits)
Third Semester (Recommended Courses)
  • ENG 101A English Composition (4 credits)
  • FYE 101 or 103 First Year Experience (1 or 3 credit(s))
  • MAT or CIS - placement is based on Accuplacer results (3 credits)
  • Elective (3 credits)
