Today kicks off LCCC's Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge. The Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge will include the following assessments: 1-mile walk/run, 1-minute timed sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups, and sit and reach.
* For the 1-mile walk or run participants will complete 1 mile. This is a simple measure of cardiovascular health and endurance.

* 1-minute timed sit-ups are a test of core strength. Participants can start and stop within the minute as needed. An alternative for this would be the abdomen machine in the weight room.

* Push-ups are not timed and will be performed until failure. Alternatives for the push-up are modified push-ups, or seated chest machine in the weight room. The push-up is a gold standard test that tests endurance and full-body strength.

* Pull-ups have no time limit. Pull-ups are a good measure of upper body strength. Alternative is the assisted pull-up machine in the weight room.

* Sit and reach. This test measures how far you can reach, which can reflect lower back and hamstring flexibility.

Please see Miranda Costa in the fitness center for more information or to participate! The challenge will end Friday, April 26.

The Exercise Science, Health, and Physical Education Department of Luzerne County Community College has begun to plan the 13th Annual Race for a Cause 5K Run & Fun Walk. The 5K Run/Fun Walk will be held April 26th, 2024 on the main campus in Nanticoke. Last year through the efforts of the Exercise Science/HPERD majors, Runners, Walkers and Sponsors, the event raised approximately $4000.00. Again, this year under the leadership of Miranda Costa/Full-Time Fitness Center Staff and the entire Health Promotions for Wellness Fitness & Sport class of 2024, will begin to raise funds for a "Race for A Cause", where funds will directly support LCCC students in need.

In order to attract more Runners/Walkers, as well as, to increase the awareness of such a great cause, the class would appreciate any Charitable donations for the Run/Walk, either for our raffle giveaway, free continental food and drink for Runners/Walkers or monetary donations. We realize this is a difficult year economically but unfortunately the relief for those in need doesn't relent because of such conditions. If your donation is monetary, please make checks payable to LCCC Physical Education Department.

If any department would like to donate a basket please Miranda know.

We much appreciate you in advance for your consideration for such a great cause.

Respectfully Yours,
Ed Gurtis

LCCC Writing Center
https://luzernewc.mywconline.com/

In Fall 2023, we partnered with a company that creates scheduling platforms for students to submit their work to the Writing Center online and to access the in-person Writing Center for availability information and to schedule appointments. The first semester ran smoothly, with some exceptions.

However, as expected, there have been some bumps along the way, and with this new system in place, students, faculty, and staff, understandably, have questions. The following is an overview of the Writing Center and solutions to commonly asked questions:

Accessing the Writing Center

Students can access our website by using the Writing Center link on the Student Intranet, and the instructions that I am about to share are located there as well. Students can also access the website directly here: https://luzernewc.mywconline.com/

Setting up a login:

When accessing the Writing Center website, all users will need to log in to view our schedule. This login can be created using any email the student prefers. Please note that dual enrollment students should not use their high school email address because their district blocks email communication with external sources.

Once the student logs in, they can choose to access the online schedule or the in-person schedule, which shows availability for all centers. Students can also jump back and forth between schedules by using the "Schedule" menu at the top of the page.

In-person scheduling:

For an in-person visit, sign in and access the schedule to review each center's availability. It is not necessary to schedule an appointment to visit the Writing Center in person. However, please note that our busiest times are during weeks 12-16. It is recommended that students choose to schedule appointments during those times.

To schedule an appointment, the student will click on their preferred date and time. A window will open, and they will enter their name, course title and instructor name, and attach their file. Students can upload up to 4 files, so they can also include assignment instructions, samples, etc. Once the information is complete, simply click the submit button at the bottom of the window.

An email will be sent to the student to confirm that the appointment has been made, and another email will be sent to notify the student that the appointment was completed. Once the student receives this notification, they can return to their appointment to reference the review report at any time.

Should a student need proof of their visits, they can print out the email confirmation or save the confirmation as a pdf. This allows students the ability to submit verification both physically and digitally.

If a student does not receive a confirmation email verifying their appointment and/or notifying them of the completed appointment, please direct them to check their spam, or they can simply access the completed review by logging into the system and accessing their appointment.

Online scheduling:

Students who choose to submit online will navigate to the proper schedule and choose one of the open "slots." These submissions are asynchronous, meaning the student does not need to attend the session. The student will follow the same process for scheduling an in-person visit for an online submission. The student then receives an email confirming their submission and another email notifying them when the review is complete. Please allow up to 72 hours for a completed online review.

Virtual appointments:

In addition to online and in-person, we now offer virtual appointments. These appointments allow students to meet with a reviewer face-to-face in the online environment. This review takes place on our website, so students will simply access their appointment at the specified time and join the session just like they would for BB Collaborate or Zoom.

The schedule for these appointments is located on the in-person schedule with a specific individual labeled as the virtual reviewer.

Questions/Troubleshooting:

The most important clarification about this system is that it is run and maintained by a third party. LCCC's IT department does not handle any questions or problems with our software. To answer any technical/accessibility questions, please contact the Writing Center directly.
