Luzerne County Community College (LCCC) proudly hosted the 36th Annual Outstanding Adult Learner Award reception on April 29, 2025, celebrating the inspiring achievements of adult learners in the region. This year's recipient, Amy Depa from Danville, was honored for her remarkable journey as an adult student.

The event took place at the Educational Conference Center, attracting a crowd of faculty, family, and friends who gathered to support and celebrate the accomplishments of adult learners from each of the member institutions of the Luzerne County Council on Adult Higher Education (LCCAHE). Established as a consortium of local colleges and universities, the LCCAHE has been recognizing the contributions of adult learners for over three decades.

Amy Depa, 44, is a first-time college student who overcame many obstacles along her educational journey. During an interview after the ceremony, she reflected on her experience. "I was at a crossroads in my life," Amy shared. "I never thought I had the chance to go to college, and I certainly believed I was too old. But I chose the better road, and it?s never too late to change your path."

Throughout her time at LCCC, Amy particularly enjoyed her philosophy and history classes, crediting her professors for their outstanding support and guidance. "Heather Jones, the coordinator of the Human Services Department, was instrumental in my journey," she said. "She helped me navigate my classes and provided the encouragement I needed to succeed."

As she prepares to graduate with an Associate Degree in Human Services on May 29, Amy has exciting plans ahead. "I?ll be transferring to Bloomsburg University for their MSW program in social work," she explained. "I want to focus on helping individuals struggling with drug addiction and mental health issues."

Facing the challenges of returning to school later in life, Amy admits it wasn?t always easy. "I didn?t know how to use a computer since we didn?t have them when I was in high school," she recalled. "There were tears and doubts, but my parents, who were both teachers, provided unwavering support."

Amy's story serves as a beacon of hope for other potential adult learners who may hesitate to pursue their educational goals. "I feel empowered and enlightened," she stated. "This was the best choice I ever made. It?s never too late to start learning, so take that first step?just one foot in front of the other."

The Outstanding Adult Learner Award ceremony is a reminder of the significant achievements of adult students in the Luzerne County area. With support, determination, and a passion for learning, individuals like Amy Depa inspire us all to pursue our dreams, no matter the challenges that may arise.
